POSTPARTUM (4th TRIMESTER CARE)

Let’s Bring the Focus Back to You, Momma ♥

Did You Know?

  • Most women in the United States must independently navigate the postpartum period until their traditional postpartum visit at 4–6 weeks. This is often the most challenging time for new mothers.

  • More than half of pregnancy-related complications occur after delivery, highlighting the critical need for early postpartum care.

  • The first three months postpartum, also known as the 4th trimester, is a period of profound emotional, physical, and social transformation called “matrescence.” It’s a time when many new moms struggle with identity shifts, overwhelming emotions, and physical recovery.

  • Up to 40% of women skip their postpartum visit due to the challenges of early motherhood, leaving many without the support they need.

Dr. Iris founded Luminé Wellness after recognizing the lack of comprehensive postpartum care in traditional medicine. She witnessed countless new mothers struggling to recover physically, emotionally, and mentally, without adequate support or resources. With her expertise in Osteopathic Medicine and a holistic approach, Dr. Iris is dedicated to making sure you—the mother—are at the center of your postpartum care.

The Forgotten Transition: What is the 4th Trimester?

The 4th trimester refers to the critical first three months postpartum, a time of profound change as you transition into motherhood. This period, known as “matrescence,” mirrors the emotional and physical transformations of adolescence. Yet, unlike pregnancy, this stage often lacks the care and attention new moms desperately need.

During pregnancy, you likely had 15–17 prenatal visits with your OB, friends and family checking in on you, and even strangers offering their seats to you. But after giving birth, the attention shifts entirely to your baby. Once you’re discharged from the hospital, you’re told, “Good luck! See you in 4–6 weeks.” Meanwhile, these early weeks can be some of the most challenging of your life.

The Challenges of Postpartum: What Society Doesn’t Tell You

In today’s society, motherhood often comes with immense pressure to be “perfect.” Social media glamorizes the postpartum period, leaving many new moms feeling isolated and inadequate. Yet, it’s natural to experience a wide range of emotions—joy, nostalgia, sadness, and frustration—as you navigate this transition. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and it doesn’t mean you’re failing.

However, it’s important to distinguish between normal postpartum emotions and postpartum depression. Persistent sadness, anger, or anxiety lasting more than two weeks may signal the need for professional support. At Luminé Wellness, we’re here to help you differentiate and address these challenges.

How Luminé Wellness Supports You

Dr. Iris created Luminé Wellness to fill the gap in postpartum care. We provide personalized, holistic services to help you recover, rebuild, and thrive during this transformative time.

Our Approach

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM): Gentle, hands-on, whole-body treatment for pain relief and improved function.

  • Lifestyle Medicine: Tailored support for nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep.

  • Soul-Focused Healing: Advanced energy healing to nurture your emotional and mental well-being.

  • Breathwork and Pelvic Floor Activation: Essential exercises for recovery and core strength.

  • Lactation Support: Expert guidance for a smoother breastfeeding experience.

Why Early Care Matters

Did you know that more than half of pregnancy-related complications occur postpartum? Most postpartum complications occur within the first 7 days to 6 weeks after childbirth, with the highest risk for severe, life-threatening issues occurring within the first 2 weeks. And yet, most women don’t receive medical attention until their 6-week follow-up appointment. At Luminé Wellness, we bridge this gap, providing care when you need it most.

What is Matrescence?

Matrescence /mæˈtres.əns/ noun.
— The emotional, mental, physical, social, and physiological transformative process a woman goes through as she becomes a mother.

Matrescence is a developmental passage that begins when a woman tries to conceive, gives birth, or becomes a mother through adoption or surrogacy. This term, coined by medical anthropologist, Dana Raphael, in 1973, reflects the profound identity shift that happens during this time – a process that can last from the postpartum period to as long as 10 years or more.

“When a baby is born, so is a mother. Each unsteady in their own way.”
— Alexandra Sacks, MD

This transformative journey involves the “push and pull” of emotional changes, much like adolescence. It’s normal to feel ambivalent as you adjust to motherhood, and it’s important to recognize that matrescence is different from postpartum depression. Embrace this transformation with self-compassion and grace!

Understanding Matrescence: It’s Not Just Postpartum Depression

Matrescence is a natural part of becoming a mother. It’s the tug-of-war between your old self and your new identity. You might feel nostalgia for your pre-baby life, irritation, or even boredom. These emotions don’t make you a bad mom; they make you human. Remember, you don’t have to be perfect—just “good enough” is more than enough for your baby.

Common Postpartum Conditions We Treat

Many new moms face physical discomfort or pain that can hinder their quality of life. We specialize in treating:

  • Low back pain, SI joint pain, and sacral dysfunction

  • Pelvic floor issues, such as urinary incontinence or dyspareunia

  • Pubic symphysis pain

  • Migraines, headaches, and sinus disorders

  • All musculoskeletal pain from delivery or parenting demands

Our goal is to help you feel stronger and function better, so you can comfortably embrace your new role as a mom.

Postpartum Care (4th Trimester)

Care during the postpartum period is designed to support both your recovery and your baby’s transition—restoring balance, reducing tension, regulating the nervous system, and guiding you through the critical first 12 weeks and beyond.

Payment plans are available through Cherry.

🌿Bonded Beginnings

Postpartum Care for Mother & Baby

The postpartum period is a shared transition, not just a recovery for mom or an adjustment period for the baby.

Feeding, sleep, comfort, posture, and healing are deeply connected between you and your baby. When one is supported, the other improves.

Bonded Beginnings is a physician-led, osteopathic care experience designed to treat both mother and baby together—restoring alignment and balance, resolving birth trauma and tension, and regulating the nervous system during the most critical early months.

This is NOT conventional medicine’s fragmented care. This is integrated postpartum healing for mom and baby.

Who This Is For

  • Postpartum mothers within the first 6 months after birth

  • Babies experiencing feeding challenges, tension, or discomfort

  • Mothers navigating pain, core weakness, or pelvic imbalance

  • Families who want proactive, hands-on support during the fourth trimester

Our Approach

Using gentle, hands-on osteopathic medicine, each session is tailored to both mother and baby:

  • Restoring whole-body balance, including sacral, pelvic, spinal, and rib alignment for mom

  • Supporting core and postpartum recovery

  • Releasing birth trauma and tension patterns in baby (head, neck, diaphragm, feeding structures)

  • Improving feeding mechanics and comfort for the breastfeeding dyad (mom + baby)

  • Regulating the nervous system for both

Because when both are treated together, outcomes are often faster, more complete, and long-lasting.

🏡In-Home Care Options

For patients who prefer care in the comfort of their home, in-home visits are available—particularly in the final weeks of pregnancy and early postpartum period.

Most new moms opt for the first 1-2 postpartum visits to be in the comfort of their own home. You don’t have to worry about leaving the house, and Dr. Iris can evaluate you in your actual environment—feeding, positioning, how you're moving—making treatments more precise and tailored to your exact needs.

  • Focus on root cause(s), not just symptom relief

  • Designed specifically for the fourth trimester and beyond

Our Philosophy

  • Your body is not broken.

  • Your baby is not “difficult.”

  • Both of you are adapting and learning from each other once baby is out of the womb.
